I believe Ben is correct in trying to save the Island from getting into the wrong hands, which he stopped once already with dharma. i.e, Widmore Co. or Paik Industries. The Island has some serious capabilities and Ben knows all to well about them. I think Ben is messed up but in a twist knows alot and what should be done.

Is the Island the garden of eden?, is it in fact Shangri la – Paradise. Hence the healing possiblities and minerals and of course the women unable to be pregnant — foreign invader.

The smoke can be alot of things; Death himself or the snake of eden or maybe it is is Jacob. Maybe all three.

The boat is not a rescue boat as already has been pointed out on the show. It is a crew looking for ben but because of the team i would say that they are investigating mythology, electromagnetism and spirits. The billionaires as mentioned above and just to clarify i meant Penny’s father and Sun’s father respectively, well billionaires and obsessions for the unknown and power go hand in hand.

Jacob the presence in the hut is all about facing your own demons and the dead. Even though the person we saw on camera was Jack’s dad Christian, if you caught the webisode you would have seen that also.

When J.J took on the show Lost all they wanted was a drama based on survivor and castaway. A show was made but it was terrible and he said that he wanted the same frame work with the added elements of mythology and supernatural.

Some references i think fit well.

Mythology: Polar bears, eden or shangri la, i ching, bermuda triangle.
Supernatural: Jacob, Smoke, ghosts, healing.

And much much more.

The oceanic 6 element just added is very reminiscent of the 1937 book “lost horizon” which is about a plane crash and the survivors find shangri la, they become interwoven with the place and it’s abilities. Eventually they get home but they had been in paradise and want to get back, it’s calling them. Conway the Lead in the book is just like Jack!!
I believe everybody else bar the 6 stay behind and live there. Remember the losties all have terrible lives outside of the island but there they are given a fresh start in paradise
