The Lion King: The Broadway Musical’s first performance was featured at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on 8th of July in 1997. This adaptation bagged six Tony Awards in 1998 which included awards for Best Musical, Choreography and Direction. It has received critical acclaim and tremendous popularity owing to its breathtaking special effects and beautiful staging. It has been established on the basis of Walt Disney’s most thriving animated film to date i.e. ‘The Lion King’. It beautifully depicts the journey of Simba, a lion cub, from a free soul to his rightful place as the king of the jungle. It is a journey of deliverance and self finding that is portrayed by the death of a parent, friendship, vengeance, denial, coming of age and finally triumphs over evil. In spite of being an age old customary story, it can be related to by all the cultures. Even if you have seen the original movie the play is worth a watch, in fact it is a must see on the stage as the personal appeal and approach is unmatched to even by the movie.
The play has been directed superbly by Julie Taymor who is one of America’s most celebrated directors owing to her feat of bringing the Lion King from the cinemas to the theaters. The Lion King is the first musical by Julie in mainstream theatre. Owing to her broad experience in epic theatre and opera productions she has bagged the Tony award, which is a first for any woman as a director of a musical. Taylor has managed to display the same disciplines while directing ‘The Lion King’. The masks and the puppets for the show have been beautifully created by the leading British designer Richard Hudson. The lighting department has been handled by Donald Holder whereas the job for costume design and choreography has been done by Julie and Fagan respectively. Together they have successfully managed to bring the whole savanna to life and one can’t help but applaud the manifestation of animals that has been beautifully depicted by a cast of 50 superb actors. Its duration is three hours and 232 puppets, 27 kite-birds and143 people along with hundreds of extras have been employed.
Giant masks were created by the director for the depiction of the characters of Scar and Mufasa all the while revealing the actors face for the respective actors’ facial expressions. For the creation of a positive atmosphere several inventive and creative techniques have been applied. For example the wild beast stampede was created by the placement of several portals in a row. The canvas scroll and several large rollers were used for the creation of the illusion of thousands of racing animals. It is an electrifying effect and gives the impression of wild beasts not only stampeding towards Simba – but also towards you!
It is a spellbinding rendition of the Disney film that stands out on its own owing to the directors’ ardor and enthusiasm that not only suspends disbelief but also captivates the theater audiences.

Playwriting for Puppet Theatre $63.65 Playwriting for Puppet Theatre provides a foundation for those puppeteers, teachers and librarians who want to develop suitable scripts for puppet theatre. Mattson explores the difference between traditional theatre and puppet theatre and notes the special characteristics of the various puppets. The important aspects of script writing are then addressed. She considers the many general questions which must be answered by the playwright: the type of puppet to be used, the audience, and availability of resources and facilities. Suggestions are then given for dramatizing original ideas and for adapting wellknown stories. The chapter on plot development emphasizes the importance of perspective, transitional material and the need for action. One chapter proposes various ways to develop a character through dialogue, names, and behavior. Another chapter demonstrates how the use of rhyme can add interest and humor to a puppet play. Teachers will find suggestions on how to develop a play on a specific theme or about a specific character. Some attention is also given to the mechanics of writing a play. Includes a group of puppet plays which have been successfully performed by Seattle Puppetory Theatre. Among them are Rumplestiltskin, The Princess and the Pea, The BadTempered Wife, The Golden Axe, The Swineherd, and The Fisherman and His Wife. Production notes follow each script. Several samples of manipulation charts are included which may be used as an aid in blocking the puppets and the puppeteers for the various hand puppet productions. Author: Mattson, Jean M. Town $65.33 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A town is a settlement ranging from a few hundred to several thousand (occasionally hundreds of thousands) inhabitants, although it may be applied loosely even to huge metropolitan areas; the precise meaning varies between countries and is not always a matter of legal definition. Usually, a town is thought of as larger than a village but smaller than a city, though there are exceptions to this rule. Historically, in Great Britain at least, a village became a town only when it had been granted a charter to hold a regular livestock market. This had little to do with the size of the population.
