It replaces Sooty Heights, although the setting is much the same. Like Sooty Heights, it follows TV puppet Sooty, along with friends, Soo, Sweep and Scampi, as they run a hotel, which is redecorated and later renamed as Hotel Sooty. The show is presented by Richard Cadell and Vicki Lee Taylor, and introduces the new character of Miki, a cat from Brazil, and recurring character Butch the dog, who plays a more frequent role. Each episode also features a music video, which, in the first series, uses a blue screen. Sooty is consistently repeated on the CITV Channel, shown weekdays at 3pm. The programmes featured play with words, songs, stories and puppets. Puppets emerged from the green Ragtime Bag, including wooden spoons with faces drawn on them. These were named Mr Porridge, Mr Curry, Mr Jelly, Miss Sponge, Mrs Custard, Uncle Casserole and Mrs Ragamuffin. Other puppet regulars included Dax and Sniff (both dogs), Humbug the tiger and Bubble, a cushionshaped toy. The music was provided by Peter Gosling and Dave Moses. The first programme, called Moving house, was broadcast at 10:45 am in January 1974 on BBC1, as part of the schools educational television, and it later moved to BBC2 in September 1983 when BBC1 introduced a daytime schedule. The series original intention was to teach children safety, reading and basic health and fitness. The show featured a mixture of human actors and puppets. Originally it featured two puppets called Alice (a hamster) and Crow, but they were replaced by a puppet dragon called Duncan in 1979, who was in turn replaced in 1983 with two new puppets, a twin sister and brother duo, the gruffvoiced but goodhumoured Cosmo and the rather downtrodden Dibs, (puppeteered and voiced throughout by Frances Kay and Francis Wright) who lived in a street market. Initially Dibs (the male twin) was cast as a naughty and mischievous character (largely owing to the presenters general favouritism towards Cosmo); while Cosmo herself was the sensible one.
